Pergolide Survey

We are compiling data on pergolide usage in horses.  If you have a horse treated with pergolide, please fill out the survey. It will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

The survey can be accessed on My Best Horse’s website:  https://mybesthorse.com/pages/pergolide-survey

Alternately, you can use this link:

This data is important to collect. The goal is to publish data on pergolide usage.

**If your horse has passed on, please add that horse to the survey as well.

**If you have previously added your horse to a survey like this, please include that horse.

This data is important for veterinarians to be able to effectively treat their client horses.

Back story why this is important:

Pergolide has been a gold-standard for treatment for PPID. However, in 2007 pergolide was pulled from the market because of adverse effects in humans. After efforts by Dr. Eleanor Kellon, Nancy Collins, Dr. Kathleen Gustafson, and many others, the FDA allowed compounded pergolide to be used in horses.

Fast forward to 2011, Prascend® was approved by the FDA for use in horses. However, Prascend® has always been marketed to not exceed about 4 mcg/kg per day.

This means that an 1100 lb horse should not exceed 2 mg per day, while a pony should not exceed 1/2 mg per day.

Why it matters now:

From experience on the ECIR Group, we have discovered that many horses need more than 2 mg per day to effectively treat PPID. And many ponies need more than 1/2 mg per day.

However, since the website and package insert clearly instructs veterinarians and owners to not exceed the recommended amount, many veterinarians are hesitant to prescribe higher amounts leaving horses undertreated.

This is why it is so important to gather data on pergolide usage. The goal is No Laminitis.

Publishing this information will be one small step to add to the body of information for helping veterinarians and owners achieve that goal.

◆︎ Final notes:
