Chastetree Berry to Help Shedding

Spring is finally arriving and time for our horses to shed out their winter coats for new sleek summer coats. However, older horses with a heavy thick coat and guard hairs, may not shed easily. Chastetree berry may be able to help.

Chastetree berry has a number of beneficial effects that are seen in some horses.

➡ May improve shedding of old coat: Effects are usually seen in 2-3 weeks that there is improved shedding. Frequently the new coat comes in and is sleeker. This is especially important so that horses do not get overheated.

➡ May lift depression and apathy: Some horses seem livelier with a better sense of well-being. Robert Eustace of the Laminitis Trust found that in a trial of 120 horses, all horse owners reported that there was an improvement in demeanor.

➡ May allow the horse to feel more energetic: Horses that were more listless seem to be back to their normal self.

➡ May reduce polydipsia and polyuria: Some horses find that their thirst returns to normal with chastetree berry.

➡ May improve hoof comfort: Some horses find improved hoof comfort.

Now is the time of year to consider helping your horse’s comfort. When a horse doesn’t shed fully in the summer, the heat can cause increased stress. If your horse doesn’t shed, body clipping your horse is a mammoth job, but a kind thing to do.
